Obama administration weighing options for Guantanamo Bay prisoners
And it looks like they may have found a solution. According to government officials speaking on condition of anonymity the military is planning to set up a court-in-prison facility to house the 229 suspected terrorists still at Guantanamo Bay.
The idea would combine military and civilian detention facilities and would likely have a courtroom in the prison, an unprecedented and no doubt controversial move. The fact that Obama is bringing the terrorists into the United States alone is bound to get Fox News and Friends spun all out of control.
While White House officials made it clear that no decisions have been made yet they did note that the White House considers the courtroom-prison complex as “the best among a series of bad options.”
One of President Barack Obama’s campaign promises was to close the Guantanamo Bay facility, which was a glaring symbol of the Bush administration. As president Obama signed an order to have the facility closed down by January, 2010. Earlier this year though Congress blocked $80 million designated to move the remaining prisoners into the United States. Legislators wanted to see what the administration’s plans were for dealing with the prisoners before granting funding.
