In other news, the Iraqi’s three-member president’s council gave its approval of the status of forces agreement between the U.S. and Iraq. The council’s approval was the last step in ratifying the agreement.
The approval came one week after the Iraqi parliament signed off on the deal. Many times it looked like this deal would not get through, bogged down on both sides with intense negotiations.
Under the deal, U.S. combat forces will withdraw from Iraqi cities by June 30 and the entire country by Jan. 1, 2012. Iraq will also take many steps towards controlling its own sovereignty.
“Today is a remarkable achievement for both of our countries,” said Dana Perino, White House press secretary. President Bush is expected to give a written statement later today as well.
