United we stand, divided we fall

Seven years ago today our nation was rocked in an unprecedented attack against our country. Nothing that I can type onto this computer will give justice to the atrocities of what happened that day. Forgive me for not going into details, but even typing about this now is making my hands shake. What I do want you to remember though is the feeling that our country had after the attacks. We were humbled. We were scared. We were hurt. Most importantly though, we were unified.

Unfortunately today that feeling doesn’t exist. One could argue that the rift between conservatives and liberals is even greater now than it was before 9/11. At least for today though, our country was united once again. Even on the political front.

Today John McCain and Barack Obama both appeared together at ground zero. There were no talks of the ailing economy, the housing crisis, rising gas prices or any of the problems that affect our country today. No rousing speeches were given, no attacks on the other candidate. Even attack ads were pulled off of TV for the day. At least for one day, the looming election took a step back.

This will likely be the last day like this until November.

I asked you to remember how our country felt not to bring up the pain or horror that we all felt that day, but to remember that unity. No matter what happens this election, if your guy wins or loses, it will be vitally important as our country moves foward that we do so together. Hand in hand, step by step, making bipartisan solutions to the bipartisan problems that we face. Today the election didn’t matter because today was about something greater. That’s the thing about our country though, our country stands for ideals that are greater. They’re greater than democrats and republicans, it goes across all party lines. Just something to think about.
